Deceptive Bends – 8 - a population with a broad spectrum –
8 – the Future
This is not an abstract concern. Patterns of use are influenced and, at times, actively encouraged. Locations such as Ryka's Cafe have long been part of the valley’s motoring heritage, but with that position comes a degree of responsibility. Where activity associated with such venues contributes—directly or indirectly—to repeated noise disturbance or inappropriate road use, it is reasonable to expect a more active role in managing its impact.
Where commercial activity benefits from high-volume motor use, it cannot reasonably remain detached from the consequences of that use.
The issue, therefore, is not who is welcome here. Everyone is.
The issue is whether any one form of use is allowed to dominate to the detriment of others.
“Deceptive Bends” is more than a road sign. It is a reminder that this landscape demands awareness and restraint. Not everything is as open or as consequence-free as it may first appear.
The Mole Valley has accommodated generations of different users because no single group has been allowed to define it entirely. Preserving that balance now requires the same principle to hold: enjoyment of the valley must not come at the expense of those who live in it, or those who seek its quieter pleasures.
